The majority of sportscars you see on a daily basis are low, but they are still high enough to make the car driveable on the roads, i.e., you wouldn’t want to get stuck in your driveway after paying AED 800,500 for your 2024 Nissan GT-R. The question is why do these cars have lower centre of gravity and what will happen if they don’t? Let’s find out;
Lower Centre of Gravity = Better Handling
A lower centre of gravity helps the car corner faster and prevents it from rolling over. A balanced weight distribution also plays a vital role here. The ideal weight distribution for a sportscar is 50/50. If the front of the car is heavier, it is more likely to understeer, and if the rear is heavier, it is more likely to oversteer.
Unlimited Traction
A car with a lower centre of gravity has faster acceleration and deceleration as long as the tires don’t wear out. That is because lowering the centre of gravity minimizes the suspension recoil. By stiffening or hardening the suspension, no time is wasted transferring the weight from the front to the back or back to the front when braking or accelerating; the tires have no other option but to stick to the surface and provide traction.
Minimal Body Roll
An SUV is relatively challenging to steer and keep steady at higher speeds than a sportscar. Because the low ground clearance works its magic to keep the car from swaying everywhere, it just grips the road instead of losing traction. Race cars are designed in such a way that even while taking a turn at 200+ km/h, they don’t flip over, lose traction or understeer. That is how a lower centre of gravity helps sports cars to remain stable at higher speeds.
Not Suitable for Everyday Driving
Although this seems fantastic, you can only do it sometimes. If you’re not getting paid to do it, obviously, because then you’d be a professional race car driver. You can enjoy this kind of experience by driving go-karts, too. But driving a car with low ground clearance can be a bit of a hassle, really. It will make your already complicated life more complex, and you will regret the day you decided to buy that car. So, stick to our advice and buy a Lexus to run errands. If you have enough money left, you can buy a lowered car too.
