SEC Approval to Build EV Charging Stations Across Sharjah
Sharjah is set to significantly expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as part of a sustainability initiative approved by the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC). This new project will see hundreds of EV charging stations installed across the emirate, covering key commercial, residential, and highway areas. The plan includes fast chargers, which will shorten the distance between charging points and make EV adoption more convenient for drivers.
The initiative aligns with the UAE’s National Electric Vehicles Policy, aiming to have 50% of vehicles on UAE roads be electric by 2050. This project not only supports the transition to eco-friendly transportation but also solidifies Sharjah’s goal of becoming a net-zero city. The partnership between SRTA and BEEAH will boost the emirate’s leadership in sustainable energy solutions, furthering efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy.
Furthermore, while some EV charging stations across Sharjah and the UAE currently offer free services, authorities have decided to implement a unified pricing structure across all stations to standardize costs. Under this revised system, express charging services will incur a minimum fee of Dh1.20 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), inclusive of VAT. For slower charging options, the minimum charge will be set at Dh0.70 per kWh, plus VAT. This move aims to create a consistent and transparent cost structure, ensuring the sustainability of the charging infrastructure as the number of electric vehicles continues to grow across the region.
