Dubai Goes Green: EV Revolution with 740 EV Charging Stations
Dubai has adopted the electric car culture quite well. According to reports, there are currently over 34,970 electric vehicles in the UAE. To address this, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is planning to set up more than 740 EV charging stations across the country.
Since 2014, DEWA has been serving more than 16,828 customers with EV charging stations. Due to the increase in demand, DEWA has decided to increase production instead of raising prices. A total of 31,674 megawatt hours of electricity is being provided to electric vehicles at the moment.
DEWA’s Smart App
Apart from ultra-fast, public, and wall-box chargers, these new EV charging stations will be equipped with the latest technology. DEWA’s smart app has marked the location of all of these charging stations so that they are easily accessible.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA, said, “ The EV Green Charger initiative, launched by DEWA in 2014, aims to provide a pioneering infrastructure for EV charging stations, supporting the steady increase in electric vehicles across Dubai. The UAE aims to have 50 percent of the cars on its roads electric by 2050. Recently, we launched a comprehensive Regulatory and Licensing Framework for the development and operation of EV charging infrastructure in Dubai. This represents a significant step towards promoting green mobility and achieving Dubai’s target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
Independent Charge Point Operator Licenses
Dewa has given special licenses called “Independent granted two companies, Tesla and UAEV,e Point Operator (CPO) licenses” to two companies, Tesla and UAEV. These companies set up and manage EV charging stations in Dubai.
The purpose of this move is to:
Encourage Private Sector Involvement
Dewa wants private companies like Tesla and UAEV to actively participate in building EV infrastructure rather than relying only on government initiatives.
Promote Sustainability
By enabling more EV charging stations, Dewa is supporting the shift to electric vehicles, which are more environmentally friendly compared to traditional gas-powered cars.
Reduce Emissions
Increasing the use of EVs helps decrease harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
Boost Green Investment
By licensing private companies, Dewa is encouraging investment in green technology and infrastructure, making Dubai a leader in sustainable urban development.
This step is part of Dubai’s broader vision to promote green mobility, reduce its carbon footprint, and build a robust network for EVs in the city.
