Dense Fog – Red and Yellow Alert Issued in UAE

On November 8, 2024, fog persisted across most areas of Abu Dhabi’s Al Ain and Al Dhafra region today. Fog also impacted some parts of Dubai and Sharjah. The MET Office has issued a red and yellow alert across coastal and internal areas for fog until 9 a.m. 

The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) reported fog over Madinat Hind in Dubai, Khalifa College, Remah, Al Khtam road towards Al Khaznah, and Sweihan regions in Al Ain, and over Liwa road towards Madinat Zayed, Mukhayriz, Tal Al Sarab, Bu Hamra, and Hamim road in the Al Dhafra region.

The fog was also reported over Al Maktoum International Airport, Al Arjan, Al Ajban, and Al Wathba in Abu Dhabi. Because of the low visibility, drivers in these areas are advised to drive carefully and take precautions. 

The maximum temperatures in the country’s internal regions are expected to be between 31 and 37 degrees Celsius. In comparison, the lowest temperatures are expected to be between 17 and 22 degrees Celsius in the UAE’s internal regions.

What To Do

• Slow Down: Always reduce your speed when driving in fog. It can be challenging to see obstacles, other vehicles, or road signs, so slower speeds give you more time to react.
• Use Low-Beam Headlights: Turn on your low-beam headlights, even during the day, to increase your visibility to other drivers. High beams should be avoided, as they can reflect off the fog and further reduce your visibility.
• Turn on Fog Lights: If your car has fog lights, make sure to use them. Fog lights are designed to cut through fog and help illuminate the road immediately in front of your vehicle.
• Keep a Safe Distance: Increase the distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you. This will allow you more time to stop in case of sudden braking.
• Use Road Markings as a Guide: To stay in your lane, focus on the road’s edge markings or the centerline. This helps you remain oriented when visibility is low.
• Use the Defroster and Wipers: Fog can cause moisture to build up on your windshield. Use your defroster and windshield wipers to keep your windows clear.

What Not to Do

• Avoid High-Beam Headlights: High beams can reflect off the fog and make it even harder to see. Stick to low beams instead.
• Do Not Use Hazard Lights: Unless you are pulled over or in an emergency, avoid using your hazard lights. They can confuse other drivers and make it unclear if you are moving or stopped.
• Do Not Speed Up: Even if the fog seems to be clearing, avoid sudden acceleration. Conditions can change quickly, and reduced visibility makes it hard to see obstacles.
• Avoid Changing Lanes Frequently: Stay in your lane as much as possible to avoid collisions. Lane changes can be hazardous when visibility is limited.
