E-Scooter & Bicycle Accidents Spiked in Dubai – 10 Killed & 259 Injured

In 2024, Dubai saw a massive increase in E-scooter and Bicycle accidents. According to reports, 254 accidents E-scooter and Bicycle accidents occurred in 2024, resulting in 10 deaths and 259 injuries. The injuries include 17 severe, 133 moderate, and 109 minor injuries. 

Dubai Police and the RTA disclosed these figures as part of an awareness campaign. The initiative provided educational guidelines for cyclists and electric scooter users across seven key areas of Dubai:

  • Marina
  • Al Barsha
  • Al Rukn
  • Al Murqqabat
  • Al Satwa
  • Khalid Bin Al Waleed Street
  • Al Karama.

Dubai Police & RTA Advice for Riders

The educational campaign aimed to teach cyclists and e-scooter users about road safety, dedicated lanes, pathways, and regulations. Authorities also emphasized the importance of using safety gear. Cyclist should:

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Use reflective vests.
  • Use bright white light at the front of the bicycle.
  • Use a red light at the back of the bicycle.
  • Ensure the functionality of brakes.

Dubai Police have increased traffic enforcement to ensure drivers follow laws and reduce reckless behavior. Fines for riding a bicycle outside designated areas or cycling on roads over 60 km/h are AED 300. 

Additional penalties include AED 200 for non-compliance with RTA technical requirements and AED 200 for improperly equipped bicycles or scooters. Carrying a passenger on a bike without proper gear incurs an AED 200 fine, while on an e-scooter, it is AED 300.

Major General Saif Mehir Al Mazrouei of the Dubai Police emphasized adherence to traffic laws and safety equipment. He urged the public to report unsafe actions via the Police Eye service or the We Are All Police hotline.

Bicycle-Friendly City

Hussein Al Banna, executive director of the Traffic and Roads Foundation at RTA, emphasized the importance of traffic education. He also highlighted the collaboration with Dubai Police to improve traffic safety. The focus is mainly on flexible mobility users.

He appreciated the RTA’s efforts under the ‘Dubai, A Bicycle-Friendly City’ strategy, including expanding bicycle lanes and paths. Al Banna stated that the RTA’s active role in the National Road Safety Campaign for Cyclists promotes safe practices and adherence to laws. 

In 2024, the RTA organized over 80 awareness events, benefiting around 10,000 users across key Dubai locations. The RTA has also launched initiatives like digital permits for electric scooters, developed safety standards, and created safer paths for individual mobility users.
