UAE Cracks Down on Red Light Violations with AED 50,000 Fine

Violating a red light is considered a serious traffic rules violation. It can put your life at risk, as well as the lives of other people on the road. These kinds of violations primarily result in fatal accidents or severe injuries. 

UAE police are cracking down on such violations and imposing strict penalties for offenders. Here is everything you need to know about this serious traffic violation:

UAE Federal Traffic Law

Pursuant to the UAE Federal Traffic Law, motorists found in red light violation shall be subject to a monetary penalty of AED 1,000, the accrual of 12 black traffic points on their driving record, and the mandatory impoundment of the vehicle for a duration of 30 days.

Dubai Traffic Law

In accordance with Decree No. 30 of 2023, a red light violation constitutes a grave traffic violation that poses a significant risk to public safety. Offenders shall incur a fine of AED 1,000, the imposition of 12 black traffic points on their driving record, and the compulsory impoundment of their vehicle for a period of 30 days.

Abu Dhabi Traffic Law

In accordance with Law No. 5 of 2020 governing the impoundment of vehicles in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the prescribed financial penalty for the release of an impounded vehicle is AED 50,000. The vehicle shall remain impounded for a maximum period of three months or until the penalty is duly paid. In cases where the penalty remains unpaid within the stipulated period, the vehicle may be subject to sale through a public auction as authorized under the law.

Here’s What You Need to Remember

Pursuant to Law No. 5 of 2020 concerning the impoundment of vehicles in the UAE, reckless drivers are required to pay fines. These fines can go up to AED 50,000 to secure the release of their impounded vehicles from police custody. 

Failure to pay the penalties may result in the cars being sold at a public auction. A vehicle may be subject to impoundment under the following circumstances:

  • The driver commits a red light violation by jumping a red light. 
  • The driver engages in reckless or dangerous driving behavior.
  • The vehicle is operated with an obscured, concealed, or distorted license plate.
  • The driver participates in unauthorized road racing.
  • The driver deliberately collides with a police vehicle.

This law aims to enhance road safety and ensure adherence to traffic regulations within the UAE.
